2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R Races Rivian R1T: Video

Since it launched some time ago, the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R has been put to the test against a wide range of vehicles – including its chief rival – the Ram TRX, as well as more unconventional foes like the Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat and GMC Hummer EV pickup. Now, the folks at Edmunds have pitted the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R against yet another all-electric pickup – this time, the Rivian R1T – though not only in a straight-line test.

Rather, Edmunds subjected this pair of powerful pickups to its U-Drag series, which involves pitting two vehicles against each other in a classic drag-style straight-line race, though both must then turn around and race back to the start line as well – essentially making it three kinds of events in one.

On paper, the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R and Rivian R1T match up similarly in terms of output versus curb weight, with the Blue Oval pickup utilizing the supercharged Ford 5.2L V8 making 700 horsepower and 640 pound-feet of torque, while the quad-motor Rivian hauler churns out 835 horsepower and 908 pound-feet of torque. The R1T is around 1,000 pounds heavier, but in all fairness, its original sticker price is also roughly $35k less than the Raptor R, too.

When the rubber meets the road, none of that matters, as the R1T rockets out to an early lead, as many EVs tend to do. The Raptor R doesn’t turn too well on its 37-inch all-terrain tires either, giving the Rivian an easy win. In the second race, the Raptor R does a better job keeping up, but the turn once again proves to be the death knell here. Ultimately, the R1T is clearly the quicker and better handling truck of this duo, but then again, that’s somewhat to be expected given the Raptor’s more off-road-focused intentions.
