The Edge, Bronco Sport, Escape, and Mustang Mach-E were all in the green, but the Ford Explorer saw sales slip, while the discontinued Ford EcoSport recorded no sales during Q4 2023.

Sales of the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E were in the green for Q4 2023. Shown here is the 2024 Mustang Mach-E GT with the Bronze Appearance Package.

Since many buyers cross-shop body-on-frame SUV equivalents to unibody crossovers, we’ve listed Ford utility sales below, which adds the “regular” Ford Bronco midsize SUV and Ford Expedition full-size SUV.

Overall Ford utility sales posted a seven percent increase to 195,575 units during Q4 2023. Like the Explorer, the Expedition also saw sales slip, as did those of the Bronco.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford crossover sales grew a healthy 25 percent to close out the year, led by the Edge, while the Bronco Sport and Escape also posted solid gains, and the Mustang Mach-E was positive as well.

Sales of the Edge in Q4 2023 leapt 98 percent to 35,397 units for the midsize crossover.

Ironically, production of the Edge, along with its corporate cousin, the Lincoln Nautilus, is set to end in late April at the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada. However, as previously reported by Ford Authority, the Edge will likely be replaced with an EV in the future, although the timetable for such a change has not yet been revealed.

Sales of the Bronco Sport for Q4 2023 jumped 59 percent for 31,101 deliveries for the compact crossover.

The 2024 Bronco Sport ushers in a handful of changes and updates over the 2023 model year, ditching its SecuriCode keyless entry keypad from the lineup and replacing it with a dealer installed option, dropping four exterior colors and replacing them with two others, while losing its windshield wiper de-icer. The model year also drops the entry-level Base trim, with the Big Bend becoming the lowest-priced, entry-level trim in the lineup.

Sales of the Ford Escape for Q4 2023 swelled 33 percent to 37,355 units for the compact crossover

Coming off a refresh for the 2023 model year, the 2024 Ford Escape features few changes and updates aforementioned changes, including the addition of a new Race Red color and the Active now being the entry level trim as Base becomes a fleet-only trim. The 2024 Escape drops the SecuriCode keyless entry keypad across the board as a factory option, replaced by a dealer installed part.

Sales of the Mustang Mach-E for Q4 2023 were up five percent for 11,889 deliveries for the compact-plus crossover.

For 2024, the first-ever Mustang Mach-E Rally debuts as an off-road-capable EV, looking the part with a unique front fascia, fog lights, a hatch-mounted rear wing, stripes, and a black-painted roof.

Meanwhile, sales of the Explorer for Q4 2023 slipped five percent to 48,667 units for the midsize-plus, though it still accounted for nearly a third of all Ford crossover sales and a fifth of all Ford utility sales.

Recently the 2025 Ford Explorer debuted with new tech and a redesigned interior. It is available in the Active, Platinum, ST-Line, and ST trim levels with a slightly different look on the outside thanks to a few minor styling updates.

Regarding the discontinued EcoSport, our contention at Ford Authority is that The Blue Oval is missing out on a substantial opportunity by abandoning a segment that continues to grow, specifically mainstream subcompact crossovers.

  • All percent change figures compared to Ford crossover sales for Q4 2022, unless otherwise noted
  • In the United States, there were 78 selling days for Q4 2023 and 78 selling days for Q4 2022
