While the European Ford Explorer EV is set to launch this August, the three-row North American Ford Explorer EV has yet to be revealed, though the automaker has given us a few details regarding this future model as of late. In fact, last May, Doug Field, Ford’s chief advanced product development and technology officer, said that the future North American Ford Explorer EV will feature sleek styling, Pro Power Onboard, and 350 miles of range. We’ve also known for some time that the Explorer EV will be built at the Oakville Assembly plant in Canada, and now, CFO John Lawler has revealed another interesting detail about that model while speaking at the 2024 Bank of America Automotive Summit.
“Think about it, you could probably do the footprint of an Explorer with the interior of an Expedition. I think it’s basically, it’s not exact, but it’s almost one size from the exterior to the interior degree of freedom that you can do with an EV,” Lawler said.
While Lawler didn’t exactly confirm that the Ford Explorer EV will offer up the same amount of interior volume as the full-size Ford Expedition, this is notable, regardless. These comments also go hand-in-hand with Lawler stating that the forthcoming low-cost Ford EV crossover – set to joint the lineup in late 2026 with a 25k price tag – will be sized like the Ford Escape on the exterior, but will offer the same sort of interior space as the larger Ford Explorer.
Regardless, it’s unclear when the North American Ford Explorer will launch. It was previously expected to enter production at Oakville next year, but a recent report indicates that the new model may in fact be delayed. This is due to Ford’s shift in focus from larger, pricier EVs to smaller, cheaper ones, starting with the aforementioned model due to arrive in 2026 that may be built at the Louisville Assembly plant in Kentucky.
