After wrapping up 2023 as Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle of any kind – and accounting for a whopping 44 percent of the model’s overall sales last year – the Ford Kuga PHEV continued its success in the month of January, finishing as the second-best-selling plug-in that month, trailing only the Volvo XC60. That’s was also precisely the case yet again in February, as the Ford Kuga PHEV once again ranked second in plug-in sales across Europe, according to new data from JATO Dynamics.
Last month, the Ford Kuga ranked second among all PHEVs in Europe by recording 3,178 sales – a six percent decline, year-over-year – placing it behind the segment-leading Volvo XC60, which enjoyed a sales increase of 38 percent to finish with 4,341 units sold. The Kuga did beat out the rest of its competitors, however, a list that includes the BMW X1, Mercedes GLC, Audi A3, BMW 3-Series, Porsche Cayenne Coupe, Cupra Formentor, Kia Sportage, and Volvo XC90.
In terms of the entire segment, European shoppers scooped up 72,268 PHEVs in February 2024, which is a 12 percent increase compared to a year ago. The overall automotive market also enjoyed a 10 percent sales increase year-over-year to 988,116 units, which – when combined with January – represents an 11 percent jump for that particular market versus 2023 as well. However, EV growth has slowed somewhat, which is also the case in the U.S. as of late.
“As the economic outlook has continued to improve, the car market has gone from strength to strength,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics. “This comes despite the ongoing geopolitical tensions across the continent. Despite the noticeable shift towards EVs, many European consumers are not ready to turn away from ICE cars. While we’re seeing a clear decline in demand for diesel models, drivers are opting for gasoline alternatives, rather than switching to electric.”
