Along with the Ford Puma, the Ford Kuga once again managed to crack the list of the top 25 best-selling new vehicles in Europe last month in what was a successful January for The Blue Oval. However, it’s worth noting that the Ford Kuga PHEV has long been the apple of the European car shopper’s eyes, as it previously ranked as that region’s top-selling PHEV in 2023 and accounted for a whopping 44 percent of the model’s overall sales last year. In January, the Ford Kuga PHEV continued its streak of success as well, according to data from JATO Dynamics.
In the first month of the year, the Ford Kuga PHEV ranked second among all plug-ins in terms of new registrations across Europe with a total of 3.687 – trailing only the Volvo XC60 at 4,194 registrations and recording a 16 percent increase versus January 2023. It also beat out the rest of its electrified rivals as total PHEV sales grew by 24 percent compared to January of last year.
As for the overall market, 1,011,281 new passenger vehicles were registered across Europe in January 2024, which is a year-over-year increase of 11 percent. A whopping 52.8 percent of that mix belonged to SUVs and crossovers like the Ford Kuga and Puma – 543,000 units in total – a staggering sum, indeed. At the same time, EVs increased their market share to 12 percent after enjoying an annual sales jump of 29 percent, though that growth has slowed somewhat as of late.
“It’s clear that SUVs are not losing their shine to European consumers, despite these vehicles being subject to new campaigns and regulations in certain countries,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics. “While interest in electric vehicles remains strong among consumers and fleets, these vehicles are no longer enjoying the same growth rate seen over the last year and a half. It is clear that a lack of affordable models alongside regulatory uncertainty continues to have an impact on mass adoption across Europe.”
