With Ford focusing on pushing the proverbial envelop – and developing technology for use in future road cars – via its EV demonstrators, we’ve seen some truly impressive performances by those models as of late. That includes the all-electric Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, the updated version of which debuted last April and has proceeded to shatter just about every EV drag racing record out there since. Now, the Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800 has reset the record books yet again, this time, beating its predecessor in the process.
Back in 2021, the older Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet EV set a new NHRA record for the quickest quarter-mile pass by a full-bodied EV at 8.128 seconds and 171.97 miles per hour. Now, a few years later, it managed to smash that mark after running a blistering 7.759 seconds at 180.14 miles per hour at the National Hot Rod Association Winter Nationals in Pomona, California, this past weekend.
Shaving such a considerable amount of time off its previous record-setting pass required quite a few revisions to the Ford Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, as one might imagine. Over the past couple of years, FoMoCo has shaved a whopping 40 percent of battery system’s previous weight, fine tuned the suspension geometry for optimum launches, and redesigned the powertrain to provide a 30 percent boost in output compared to the previous version as well.

“Seeing an all-electric Mustang tear down the NHRA strip in under eight seconds was nothing short of awe-inspiring,” said Mark Rushbrook, Director of Ford Performance Motorsports. “It’s a clear signal that Ford is not just participating in the electric revolution – we’re leading it, bringing our electric vehicle technology to the pinnacle of competitive racing. Every lesson we learn on the track is a step toward enhancing the performance of our EVs for customers, especially in Ford’s hybrid technology advancement. This leap forward wasn’t just about setting records; it was about reimagining the potential of electric power in motorsports.”
