Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an augmented reality weight indicator that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on June 27th, 2022, published on March 5th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11922693.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, more than one Ford patent has been filed with augmented reality (AR) as its chief focus, a list that includes an augmented reality system with sharing capability, a remote park assist feature with AR, a system that combats sun glare, a multi-plane augmented reality image generating system, and an augmented reality system for parking. Meanwhile, Ford has also introduced features designed to make towing and hauling easier as of late, including Onboard Scales and Smart Hitch while also filing a patent for an external display for payloads. Now, this newly-filed Ford patent combines those two worlds into one, somewhat.
This new Ford patent presents us with an idea for an augmented reality weight indicator, which is also aimed at making the act of towing and hauling not only easier, but safer as well. The concept is that Ford would use AR to capture image data such as the location and weight of a load within a vehicle, then relay that information to the user in a way that would help them place it in the perfect location for optimum distribution.
For example, if a heavy load is placed too far back in the bed of a pickup, as we can see in the patent images, the system could provide a warning that the rear axle of the vehicle is overloaded, and instruct the user to move it forward while also giving them a real-time look at how that weight is distributed. It’s an interesting and potentially useful idea for certain, and one that we imagine those less experienced with such things would appreciate.
