Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a mobile device holder that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on August 18th, 2023, published on March 26th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11938867.
The Ford Authority Take
In today’s world, virtually everyone has a smartphone of some sort, and that particular electronic device tends to go with us everywhere – including in vehicles, where connectivity has become a big thing. However, while many modern vehicles have some sort of phone holder or wireless charger integrated into the interior, that isn’t the case with all models. Thus, Ford recently filed a patent for an electronic device holder that’s designed to mount devices such as phones and tablets in lieu of monitors for second-row passengers, and it has followed that concept with this – a newly filed Ford patent outlining an idea for a different type of mobile device holder.
This new kind of mobile device holder is specifically designed to fit in a cupholder or other type of container insert, which isn’t necessarily a new idea, as there are some aftermarket holders that offer something similar. However, in the case of this Ford patent, the automaker has come up with a design that doesn’t prevent the use of that cup holder while the device is holding onto something like a smartphone.
Rather, the center portion that keeps the device in place expands out to hold it securely in the cupholder, yet also has space left over so that one could continue to use it to hold drinks or other items. It’s an interesting idea for certain, and one that many might find particularly useful – especially if their vehicle doesn’t have a suitable place to rest their smartphone, in particular.
