Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a smart container system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 9th, 2021, published on March 19th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11934202.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, more than one Ford patent has been filed outlining ideas for things like a cargo area tool carrier system, a new type of cargo management system, and even a fluid storage container that would reside in the cargo area as the automaker aims to continue to innovate in that particular area. Now, that trend continues with this new Ford patent filing, which presents us with an idea for a smart container system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The concept here is to create a container that goes far beyond simply giving one a place to store items – rather, this particular container could be used to transport a wide array of items, particularly, via shipping services. However, it would offer both heating and cooling capabilities, as well as built-in security features, GPS tracking, the ability to help load and unload itself, and even charge itself via an inductive charger located in the cargo area of a vehicle.
If the container is removed at the wrong location or at the wrong time – without the correct code being entered – it would even sound an alarm. The purpose here is to create a way to transport a wide variety of items without having to worry about them being in a refrigerated or heated vehicle, or those that may otherwise be delivered to the wrong location – which seems like a pretty nifty idea that could prove quite useful for a number of applications.
