The Ford Puma has remained a stalwart on the list of Europe’s top-selling vehicles since its debut a few years ago, and is set to receive its first refresh for the 2024 model year. However, we’ve known for some time that a Ford Puma EV is in the works, and Ford Authority spotted a prototype of that same model out testing last November. The Ford Puma EV – which will officially be called the Gen-E – was also announced at the same time the refreshed 2024 model made its debut. Details on the all-electric variant remain scant, though we do know that it will be sold in both Europe and Australia following its debut later this year. Now, as we wait for that to happen, Ford Authority has spotted a Puma Gen-E out testing yet again.
Though it’s covered in heavy camo, this Puma Gen-E prototype does appear to be wearing the crossover’s updated bodywork, which makes perfect sense given its pending refresh. Otherwise, there are no notable features here that differentiate it from its ICE brethren that are immediately obvious, save for the lack of a front grille and exhaust system in the rear.
It is possible that the redesigned 2024 Ford Transit Courier could offer some clues as to what we can expect from the Puma Gen-E, as it rides on the same platform as the small crossover – not Volkswagen’s MEB platform, which underpins the Ford Explorer EV and an as-yet-unnamed crossover previously spotted testing by Ford Authority as well.
The new E-Transit Courier is powered by a single, front-mounted 134 horsepower electric motor and will support DC fast charging speeds up to up to 100 kW, which could wind up powering the Puma EV, too. The Ford Puma Gen-E will be built alongside the E-Transit Courier at the Craiova Assembly plant in Romania, where the ICE versions of both models are already produced. Rumors suggest that the Puma EV will utilize a battery pack around 55 kWh in size, giving it roughly 230 miles of range, but it’s quite possible that other variants – including one with more than a single electric motor – could be in the works as well.
We’ll have more on the Ford Puma Gen-E soon, so be sure to subscribe to Ford Authority for the latest Ford Puma news and continuous Ford news coverage.
