Ford Trademark Filings In Europe Hint At RS200 Revival

Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Ford RS200” and “RS200” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), AutoGuide has discovered.

Filed on March 7th, 2024, under serial numbers 018996146 and 018996145, these applications contains the goods and services description of “Motor vehicles, namely gasoline and electric automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles and their structural parts.”

The Ford Authority Take

In recent months, Ford has filed quite a few trademarks in Europe – a list that includes ones for “Ranger Lightning,” Maverick Lightning,” and “Capri, Cortina, Escort, Granada, and Orion,” potentially previewing the return or debut of some interesting nameplates. However, this new trademark filing is arguably the most exciting of the bunch, given the fact that it could foreshadow the return of a very special machine.

The Ford RS200 is a literal legend in the world of The Blue Oval, motorsports, and the automotive industry in general, one created four decades ago with one purpose in mind – as a homologation special so that FoMoCo could go Group B rally racing. Aside from unique bodywork, the RS200 features some seriously impressive hardware, and EVO models also touted an upgraded suspension, bigger brakes, and a fortified 2.1L I-4 turbocharged Cosworth BDT-E powerplant that can churned out an incredible-for-the-time 580 horsepower, which propels it from 0-60 in just a tick over three seconds.

Ford built just 200 road-going examples of the RS200, and a mere 24 were upgraded to EVO specifications. As such, we rarely see these special machines pop up for sale, and when they do, they rake in big bucks at auction and via various other methods of sale. Most of the time we see one, it’s owned by celebrities such as Tim Allen or Ken Block, but now, others may just get their chance to pilot something with the same name – whether that be a dedicated race car or a road-going performance model of some sort.
