Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a preowned purchase advisory system that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on December 2nd, 2021, published on March 5th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11922737.

During the pandemic, new vehicle inventory plummeted to record low levels, which sent most buyers to the used market. In response, Ford launched a brand new certified pre-owned program called Blue Advantage, which has enjoyed tremendous success. Even though new vehicle inventory has bounced back, many shoppers are still looking to the used market for their next vehicle purchase, and Ford is aiming to innovate in that space again, recently filling a patent for a vehicle resale value evaluation system, and now – another patent, this time outlining an idea for a preowned purchase advisory system that may be used in future Ford EVs, specifically.
Shopping for used EVs is a bit different than a traditional ICE vehicle in that some have expressed concerns over battery degradation, in that over time, those types of models tend to lose battery life and that part eventually needs to be replaced, which is a big deal given the fact that batteries are currently prohibitively expensive. This is certain to become a sticking point when EVs become more prevalent, and that’s precisely the motivation behind this particular patent filing.
This proposed system would be capable of predicting the remaining battery life of a used EV and then relay it to a prospective buyer, which would obviously be a valuable piece of information. However, Ford notes that this system could also be used to determine not only the remaining battery life in an EV, but also, a hybrid or plug-in hybrid – which could potentially save customers a lot of money if it comes to fruition.
