Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a door mounted interface system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on April 29th, 2022, published on February 27th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11914914.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed patents for ideas such as a system that could display ads and images on windows, a new Pro Power Onboard interface, and an external display for payloads, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent presents us with yet another interesting idea that could also help tie the interior and exterior of a vehicle together with a door mounted interface system that may wind up being used in future Ford vehicles one day, too.
The concept behind this particular patent is quite simple – Ford reckons that in some cases, the occupant or driver of a vehicle may wish to communicate with someone outside of the vehicle, though in certain instances, this might prove difficult – such as when there’s a lot of environmental noise, or when one of the people involved has a hearing impairment, or even if the two people don’t speak the same language. As such, this kind of system may in fact come in handy.
The system depicted in this patent would utilize an externally-mounted screen and a computer that connects it to a user interface inside of the vehicle, along with a microphone, speaker, cameras, and various sensors. The system would also be capable of determining when the vehicle is stopped and someone is outside, trying to speak to the driver, or vice versa, and activate itself accordingly. It’s an interesting idea for certain, and one that may prove to be useful in select circumstances at some point in the future as well.
