Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a load ramp for pets that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on September 1st, 2022, published on March 7th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0075864.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford hasn’t exactly been shy about its efforts to help pet owners with ideas for new features in the future, with recent patent filings including concepts for an inflatable pet enclosure, a seat bottom mounted airbag that protects pets, an integrated pet bowl with water level sensing technology, a pet monitoring and control system, a vehicular pet restraint system, and a more involved type of pet restraint system. Now, that trend continues, albeit with a little influence from another patent filing for a cargo bed ramp system – this time, presenting us with an idea for a load ramp for pets that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The concept behind this latest patent filing is, as one might imagine, rather simple – Ford is exploring ways to integrate a ramp in the rear of its vehicles, which could be used to make it easier for pets to get in and out of the rear cargo area. This ramp could take many different forms, however, ranging from a large, wide piece to a pair of smaller ramps – though all would be capable of retracting out of the tailgate or a portion of the floor that slides out as well.
Given how many people transport their pets in vehicles these days – not to mention the fact that many of them purchase ramps from third parties for that purpose – such an idea makes a lot of sense. Pet owners would certainly find a built-in ramp to be far more convenient than an added accessory, and as such, this idea may very well come to life one day.
