Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a modular table assembly that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on September 9th, 2022, published on March 14th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0083320.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed a number of patents that aim to add work surfaces to the interiors of future models, including ideas for a seat-mounted work surface, a deployable vehicle desk, and console table assemblies. FoMoCo has also launched similar products already in actual production vehicles – a flat-folding steering wheel desk of sorts in the new Ford Transit Custom, as well as the Interior Work Surface feature that debuted in the 2021 Ford F-150. Now, this newly filed patent introduces yet another, similar idea – this time, for a modular table assembly that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
What’s particularly interesting about this patent is the fact that such a table would be very much modular, and could presumably be used for many different tasks. That includes using it as a desk for work, a place to set one’s lunch, organize items, or set an electronic device such as a phone or tablet on for the purpose of watching videos. In this case, the modular table assembly could attach to the vehicle’s steering wheel, or even fold out into a full-blown table that could be placed just about anywhere one desires – such as outside when camping.
This particular idea certainly seems like a good one, as there are times when vehicle users could find a portable, built-in table to be quite useful. That – coupled with Ford’s desire to transform its future models into more work-friendly vessels – seems to make it more likely that we may see something like this eventually come to fruition, too.
