Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a light assembly for motor vehicles that may be used on future Lincoln EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on August 26th, 2022, published on February 29th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0067107.
The Ford Authority Take
Following a decline in demand that has prompted Ford and other automakers to scale back planned EV investments – and models, in some cases – it’s currently unclear when we might see any all-electric models from the automaker’s luxury arm – at least aside from the Lincoln Aviator EV, which is slated to enter production next year, currently. Regardless, when those models do arrive, they will be second-generation EVs riding on dedicated platforms, and – according to Ford CEO Jim Farley – superior options compared to their rivals. Regardless, even as it shifts more toward more affordable EV models, Ford is still testing a production version of the Lincoln Star concept, at least.
Now, this newly filed patent could signal the arrival of a feature that we might eventually see on future Lincoln EVs – or even plug-in hybrids, it seems. Here, the automaker presents us with an idea for the iconic Lincoln Star logo that could have it serving more of a purpose than basic decoration, in fact, as it may one day not only light up, but also, display the vehicle’s current state of charge as well.
Lincoln already offers illuminated Star logos on select models, and the Corsair PHEV also has a status indicator around its charge port, but this patent filing signals that we may soon have yet another way to quickly and easily check on that same status. In any case, many current EVs offer something similar – such as the GMC Hummer EV and Rivian R1T/R1S – so it makes perfect sense that Ford would consider offering the same type of feature on future Lincoln electrified models.
