Last year, Ford and Tesla reached an agreement that has since granted Blue Oval EV owners access to the latter company’s Supercharger network, which vastly expands their available charging infrastructure in one fell swoop. As we recently learned, this deal took a bit of convincing on Ford’s part – as well as a collaborative effort between both companies – but now, FoMoCo EV owners can order a free adapter and use it to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations, even without having to download that company’s app. However, most automakers have since followed Ford’s lead, meaning that owners of those EVs will soon get the same privilege, with Rivian being the latest to join the list.
Rivian has informed its owners that they can now access the Tesla Supercharger network, and they will also begin receiving North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for their Combined Charging System (CCS) vehicles starting in April. This move effectively adds 15,000 fast chargers in North America to their potential stops when out and about, nearly doubling the 16,000 public chargers that were already available to use.
Like Ford EV owners, those that have a Rivian vehicle will also be able to utilize that company’s mobile app and in-vehicle infotainment system to access the Supercharger network, as well as pay for charging sessions. Supercharger locations will also show up in those applications, enabling owners to navigate to them when needed.
Rivian customers that want to utilize the Tesla Supercharger network can simply head to one and utilize the “plug and charge” feature with automatic billing for added convenience, meaning all they have to do is plug in and wait. All existing owners will receive an NACS adapter for free, and in 2025, all new Rivian vehicles will come equipped with an NACS port from the factory, which means future owners won’t need any sort of adapter.
