David Long – owner of Omega Auto Clinic in Kansas and purveyor of the YouTube channel Car Wizard – has covered quite a few Blue Oval models and related tech in recent history, a list that includes a 210k-mile 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, a first-generation 1966 Ford Mustang, a 1992 Ford Thunderbird, a 1995 Ford F-150, a 300k-mile F-150 SVT Raptor, and the Panther platform, to name just a few. Now, Long is back with another interesting video, this time, documenting a serious problem with a customer’s 2016 Ford Explorer.
This 2016 Ford Explorer is equipped with the naturally-aspirated 3.5L V6, but according to the customer, it’s emitting a very strong exhaust smell while they’re driving it. The owner believes that the issue could stem from broken transmission or engine mounts, which might have led to a crack in the exhaust. A handful of other shops have inspected the Explorer and failed to find the problem, however, whether or not it’s related to the exhaust or something entirely different.
With the 2016 Ford Explorer in the air, Long goes through the entire vehicle and fails to find anything broken or otherwise damaged, too. including the flex joint, which is a common cause of that particular kind of issue. Even an exhaust leak test fails to find any problems, but as Long notes, there’s still a dangerous amount of exhaust gases getting into the cabin, regardless.
After doing a little more investigating, Long realizes that the problem is actually not related to the exhaust system at all – rather, it’s the rear hatch, which isn’t closing properly, leaving a big gap between it and the rest of the vehicle on the driver’s side. This means that the seal inside isn’t able to do its job properly, and as such, this particular Explorer will need to go to a body shop for some repairs.
