Three Row Ford Explorer EV Likely Delayed Amid Pivot: Report

While the European Ford Explorer EV – a unique two-row crossover that shares nothing more than a name in common with the American Explorer – is on schedule to launch this coming summer, we’ve also known for some time that a three-row Ford Explorer EV is destined for the North American market as well. The North American version of the Ford Explorer EV – along with its more luxurious counterpart, the Lincoln Aviator EV – was slated to be the next all-electric addition to FoMoCo’s lineup when production began at the Oakville Assembly plant in 2025, in fact. However, according to a new report from Bloomberg, the three-row Ford Explorer EV seems likely to be delayed as The Blue Oval continues to tweak its future electrified strategy.

According to an unnamed source, “plans for an electric three-row SUV have been delayed,” which is notable because this is the first time we’ve heard that FoMoCo’s change of strategy could impact production of the long-rumored Ford Explorer EV for America. In fact, CEO Jim Farley has spoken at length about what this future model could look like, noting that it will have a large frunk, Pro Power Onboard,  sleek styling, and 350 miles of range.

All of these comments came before early February, however, which is when Farley revealed that the automaker was shifting its focus away from larger, more expensive EVs and instead planning to build smaller, low-cost models amid potential competition from China. Farley also added that Ford may wind up delaying some planned future EVs as a result of this change, too.

It’s unclear if the Ford Explorer will in fact be delayed as a result of this strategy shift, but Farley has made it quite clear that developing cheap EVs is a “non-negotiable,” and also revealed that a skunkworks team has been working on such a project for two years now. As Ford Authority reported yesterday, a new platform stemming from that effort is slated to underpin more than one future EV, one of which is slated to start out at $25,000 and reportedly set to arrive in late 2026.
