Back in 1994, former NFL star O.J. Simpson led police on the most famous – and perhaps slowest – chase of all time while he was a passenger in a white 1993 Ford Bronco driven by fellow football player Al Cowling, after he was considered a suspect in the murder of his wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman, a scene that has stuck with most of us ever since. Years later, that infamous Ford Bronco wound up on display at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Now, following the passing of O.J. Simpson yesterday due to a bout with cancer, the topic of that infamous Ford Bronco has surfaced yet again.
This isn’t terribly surprising given the fact that more than 90 million people tuned in to watch the 45-minute-long police chase, which actually interrupted the NBA Finals at the time. Many people even lined the streets of Los Angeles, holding up signs – some of which supported O.J. Simpson in his plight, though at the time, he was considered the prime suspect in a double murder.
Cowlings was communicating with police during the chase, claiming that Simpson threatened him with a gun and told him to drive to his wife’s grave. Simpson was reportedly holding that gun to his own head and had even left a suicide note behind, claiming that he had nothing to do with the murders. Ultimately, the chase ended without incident, and as most are well aware by now, Simpson was acquitted in court in what was one of the most famous legal cases in history.
As for the Ford Bronco – which actually belonged to Cowlings, not Simpson, though the latter owned one that was essentially identical – it was found 22 years later sitting in a garage in California. However, it later wound up on display at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum years later, and remains there to this day. However, no one has ever really forgotten about this infamous model, as the sixth-generation 2021 Ford Bronco was originally slated to debut on O.J.’s birthday – and after that fact was discovered, The Blue Oval opted to push that reveal back, understandably.
