The concept of transforming a car, crossover, or SUV into a pickup truck is nothing new – just look at the Ford Ranchero, for example, or even the Chevy El Camino – but many enthusiasts have also created their own such Frankenstein-like models over the years. However, few of those one-off builds are quite as interesting or unique as this 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII pickup – or “Makero,” as it’s otherwise known – which is set to be auctioned off at Mecum’s upcoming 2024 Houston sale.
This 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII pickup is most likely the only one of its kind on earth, having drawn inspiration from the aforementioned Ranchero. At the same time, it’s also a rather baffling machine that only took around a year and a half to put together, which seems impressive, given the fact that it’s also quite well done compared to the many botch jobs we’ve come across over the years, even if it isn’t exactly what one might call a show car.
In fact, if one stares at this former luxury coupe from the right angles, they probably wouldn’t even notice what’s going on out back. There, however, a portion of the roof has been cut out and replaced with a more upright piece of glass, while the trunk now serves as a proper truck bed.
Some may cry foul here given the fact that the Mark VIII is slowly becoming something of a collector’s item, but this example isn’t exactly pristine, as the interior shows plenty of wear, while the odometer reveals that this luxurious machine has traveled just over 100k miles in its lifetime. In fact, it’s honestly quite surprising to see something like this pop up at a collector car auction, but with no reserve price, someone will likely get a pretty interesting toy for cheap when it crosses the block this coming weekend.
