210k-Mile Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Needs New Parts: Video

Earlier this year, Tyler Hoover of the YouTube channel Hoovie’s Garage purchased a 2008 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 with a rather high 210k miles on the clock for just $14,000, and proceeded to take it to the dyno – where it still managed to put down solid power numbers in spite of its mileage. Hoover then took his latest acquisition to his resident mechanic and fellow YouTuber David Long, or the Car Wizard, who found a few issues with it – including a loose supercharger belt, worn out air filters, struts that need to be replaced, and an EVAP system leak. However, Hoover later sold the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 to Long, and now, he’s back with a new video outlining everything the well-used pony car needs.

For starters, Long removed the Mustang’s six-speed manual to replace the clutch, as the unit felt quite heavy and was engaging at a rather high point, and he also treated it to a new slave cylinder throwout bearing for good measure. However, Long also discovered quite a lot of material inside of the casing that could signal some abuse on behalf of a previous owner.

Since this car is putting out more power than stock, Long decided to replace the old single disc clutch with a McLeod double disc piece, which is rated to hold up to 800 horsepower. At the same time, he also replaced the flywheel, pilot bearing, and everything else, because that just makes sense given the fact that the transmission was already out.

Moving on, Long also points out that the control arm bushings are cracked and need to be replaced, and he also plans on replacing the lower control arms, sway bar links, trailing arms, and a few other suspension-related bits and pieces. This isn’t terribly surprising given the fact that this car has more than 210k miles on the clock, however, and can be considered just basic maintenance.
