Cam Waters of Australian Supercars fame is headed to the U.S., where he will try his hand at a different kind of motorsport than he’s used to. He’ll take control of the No. 66 NASCAR Ford F-150 race truck on April 5th, 2024 at Martinsville Speedway, his first attempt at American stock car racing.
Ford Performance will back Waters’ first Truck Series outing, along with Ohio-based ThorSport Racing, who will field the No. 66 F-150 on Friday.
“We’ve been working away at making this happen for some time and to finally be given the change to race, and with a top operation, is great,” Waters said in a press release. “I’m not putting too much pressure on myself knowing I will be getting thrown into the deep end without any testing, but hopefully I can adapt reasonably quickly and be competitive. It’s a short oval so I’m sure it will be pretty wild out there.”
He added, “I have to thank Ford Performance and the team at ThorSport for helping make this happen and also my long-time [Supercars] team Tickford Racing, who have always supported my plans to explore new driving opportunities in and around my continued dedication to winning the Supercars Championship with them.”
Tickford’s owner, Rod Nash, voice support for Waters’ interest in NASCAR.
“Anything that can provide Cam with further seat time is a bonus,” he said. “His foray into Sprint Car racing and now a NASCAR Truck event provides a fantastic way to stay sharp and further test his skills. The timing in-between the AGP event and Taupo works for our team and we’ll be wishing him well and watching with huge interest.”
Waters has also expressed interest in racing in the Cup Series, and has reportedly spoken with Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing (RFK) with interest in driving a NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse in stock car racing’s highest echelon.
