Ford Benchmarking Tesla Cybertruck: Photos

Over the past couple of years, Ford Authority has spotted The Blue Oval benchmarking every single model in Tesla’s lineup – a list that includes the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X. Thus, it wasn’t terribly surprising to learn that the automaker also acquired a Tesla Cybertruck just over a month ago, though FoMoCo reportedly paid a whopping $250k to add the EV pickup to its fleet – perhaps unsurprising given the fact that a handful have traded hands for far more than sticker price as of late. Regardless of how much the automaker wound up shelling out for its Tesla Cybertruck, Ford Authority has now spotted the automaker benchmarking it, too.

As a direct rival for the Ford F-150 Lightning, it makes perfect sense that The Blue Oval would want to take a much closer look at the Tesla Cybertruck. However, at the moment, Cybertrucks are far harder to come by, as well as far more expensive, particularly following the latest round of price cuts applied to the F-150 Lighting, as well as a new incentive aimed directly at existing Tesla owners.

That won’t be the case forever, of course, as production will eventually catch up with demand, which is precisely what has led to the Lightning’s current glut of inventory and reduced pricing. That, coupled with the burgeoning EV pickup segment and the arrival of several new competitors – including the Chevy Silverado EV and Sierra EV – means that Ford clearly wants to stay a step ahead in that regard.

Of course, perhaps the biggest thing that differentiates the F-150 Lightning and the Tesla Cybertruck are two very different approaches to exterior design. The Cybertruck has thus far been one of the most divisive automobiles in history thanks to its 8-bit video game-like styling, while the F-150 Lightning is far more traditional in that sense. In fact, Ford CEO Jim Farley previously called the Cybertruck a vehicle for “Silicon Valley” people rather than truck lovers, but he also congratulated Tesla CEO Elon Musk following its launch, too.

The newest battery cells in the Cybertruck are likely a prime focus of benchmarking.

Please, Mr. Farey, keep making actual trucks. Increase the range. Improve the recharge speedm. Reduce the cost. But make a pickup, not a spaceship. Buyers will reward you for it.
