Ford and South Korean battery manufacturer SK On continue to embark on a mission that involves a joint venture company formed between the two called BlueOvalSK, which aims to rapidly expand its EV battery output over the coming years – even as demand for those types of vehicles has tapered off as of late. However, The Blue Oval isn’t the only automaker with some sort of relationship with SK On, as Hyundai is also working with the company to develop EV batteries, while several others utilize that outfit as a supplier as well. Now, SK On is taking its relationship with Ferrari, specifically, to another level as well.
SK On recently announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Italian sports car maker that will see the two reinforce their partnership and aim to lead innovation in cell technology. This new agreement will see the two entities share expertise in both the areas of automotive and battery manufacturing in a technological collaboration that will help both companies not only explore new possibilities, but also pool knowledge with one goal in mind – advancing cell technology for future batteries that could be used not only in EVs, but also hybrids.
At the moment, SK On is Ferrari’s only battery supplier, and it has been providing those units for a number of the brand’s models since 2019 – a list that includes the SF90 Stradale, its very first plug-in hybrid, as well as the SF90 Spider, the 296 GTB, and the 296GTS, all of which are also PHEV models.
“We are excited to join Ferrari’s electrification journey,” said Lee Seok-hee, CEO of SK On. “Combining expertise and technologies from the two companies, we expect to provide customers with new experiences and values.” “When companies and suppliers come together, collaboration powers common progress,” added Benedetto Vigna, CEO of Ferrari. “We are working together with SK On to explore new frontiers and fuel the energy of shared ideas.”
