Each year, the Kogod School of Business releases the Made in America Auto Index, which highlights the new vehicles that contain the most U.S.-sourced domestic material. In last year’s report – which covers 2022 – the Ford Explorer was among those models, ranking 15th on the list thanks in part to the fact that 45 percent of the crossover’s content came from either the U.S. or Canada. Now, the 2023 version of the Made in America Index has been released, and it reveals that the Ford Explorer once again made the cut – but this time, only in one specific trim level.
In the 2023 Made in America Index, the Ford Explorer XLT ranked 20th among all new vehicles on sale, as 63.5 percent of its content is domestically sourced – one of several factors taken into account when determining these rankings. It wasn’t the only Blue Oval model to make this list either, as the Ford Explorer XLT was also joined by the Ford F-150, which ranked 17th on the Made In America Index due to its total domestic content of 65 percent, as well as the Lincoln Corsair – which topped this particular list in 2022, but fell to sixth place this past year with a domestic content of 56 percent.
The Made in America Auto Index uses four data points to calculate the total domestic content of all vehicles sold in the U.S. – the percentage of content that exclusively comes from the U.S. or Canada, the engine and transmission, the source of each of those components, and the location of assembly.
These rankings also take into account the economic value of the different components of auto manufacturing. For example, the highest-ranked cars are made by U.S. based manufacturers that utilize American engines and transmissions, as well as a high percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts. In the case of components like the engine and transmission and the location that the vehicle is assembled, those that aren’t U.S.-based are given a score of 0.
