Though the Ford Mustang Mach-E ranked as the seventh most popular used EV in 2023 by accounting for 4.6 percent of all one- to five-year-old used EV sales in the U.S., that success hasn’t been terribly even. In fact, the Mach-E ranked as the seventh slowest-selling new EV after spending 66.7 days on lots in a recent study from iSeeCars, which was 1.3 times the segment average. Regardless, as Ford Authority recently reported, sharp depreciation is making used Ford Mustang Mach-E models rather attractive in terms of pricing, and that’s also part of the reason why the crossover is among Carmax’s top used EVs of spring 2024.
The Ford Mustang Mach-E ranked as the fifth most popular used EV among Carmax shoppers in its most recent consumer trends report, behind only the Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model Y, Nissan Leaf, and Volkswagen ID.4, as well as ahead of the the Audi e-tron, Chevy Bolt EUV, Chevy Bolt EV, Tesla Model S, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The Mach-E has sold, on average, for $38,713 as well, which is notably less than the average used Model Y at $43,896.
Interestingly, pricing has played a large role in these rankings, as the average prices for the top ten most popular EVs at Carmax now range from $22,000 to $46,000 – down from $22,000 to $72,000 in 2023 – a change that occurred as many luxury models dropped off this year’s list as consumers continue to seek out value propositions.
At the same time, Carmax notes that there’s been a steady rise in interest for EVs since 2021, as monthly searches at the company’s site have nearly tripled – increasing by 177 percent – over the past few years. The biggest jump occurred between February and March 2022, which coincided with a rise in average U.S. gas prices from $3.54 per gallon to $4.20 per gallon following the onset of conflict in Ukraine.
