In van-hungry Europe, Ford has long been known as a top maker of those types of vehicles, which dominate the sales charts in that part of the world as well. In fact, in the UK – specifically – Fleet News ranked The Blue Oval as the most reliable van manufacturer as part of its annual FN50 reliability index last November, and the Automobile Association (AA) recently began using specially-equipped versions of the Ford Transit Custom to provide roadside assistance for its members, too. Thus, coming off a 2023 calendar year that saw the Ford Transit Custom top the UK’s van sales charts, it isn’t surprising to see the same model repeat that feat in Q1 of 2024, according to new data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT).
In the first quarter of the year, the Ford Transit Custom topped the light commercial vehicle sales charts in the UK by recording 12,076 sales – which was a whopping 3,476 more than the second-place Transit. In fact, the next closest van of any sort that doesn’t wear a Blue Oval badge was the Vauxhall Vivaro, which didn’t even record half the sales of the Ford Transit Custom, which enjoyed a particularly strong March with 7,809 sales, to boot. As for the overall UK car market, new registrations rose by 10.4 percent to 317,786 units, which is the best result in the month of March since 2019, not to mention the 20th consecutive month of growth in that country.
This success looks prime to continue for the foreseeable future as well, given the fact that the totally-redesigned Ford Transit Custom just launched in Europe last October. Customers there can choose from a bevy of configurations and powertrain options with the new model, as deliveries just began in Q4 2023 – though the plug-in hybrid isn’t set to launch in this spring, followed by the all-electric E-Transit Custom in the summer.
