Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a frunk with a deployable shelf system that may be used in future Ford EVs, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on September 6th, 2022, published on April 30th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11970137.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a rather large number of frunk-related patents in recent years as it aims to innovate in that newfound space, which stems from the fact that the front portion of a vehicle isn’t needed to house a large ICE engine in EVs. That list includes a frunk with built-in work and entertainment-related features, a frunk with wireless charging capability, a frunk-mounted projection screen, a frunk with a moveable platform, a configurable frunk, a frunk with various work surfaces, a frunk with component cooling capability, and a climate controlled frunk, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a frunk with a deployable shelf system that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.
Much the same way rear cargo areas in ICE vehicles feature all sorts of shelving and other ways to better carry or store items, Ford also envisions a future in which EVs offer the same sort of flexibility up front, too. In this case, that revolves around an idea for a deployable shelf, which could be used for all sorts of different purposes.
This shelf would be quite flexible in that it would fold flat when not needed, though when desired, the user could move it into different positions depending on what they want to use it for. The shelf would also be attached to a pair of rollers so that it could be easily moved from one position to another, making it quite useful if it does indeed come to fruition one day.
