The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed a bevy of frunk-related patents in recent years as it aims to innovate in that newfound space, which stems from the fact that the front portion of a vehicle isn’t needed to house a large ICE engine in EVs. That list includes a frunk with built-in work and entertainment-related features, a frunk with wireless charging capability, a frunk-mounted projection screen, a frunk with a moveable platform, and a climate controlled frunk, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for a frunk with component cooling capability that may be used in future Ford EVs, too.

In this case, Ford proposes using the frunk of its future EVs not as a space for extra storage or even somewhere where we could place cold items like groceries to keep them cool – but rather, using the frunk as a place to install cooling equipment for the vehicle itself. The concept here is that high-performance models require additional cooling – even EVs – particularly when charging or engaging in things like track days.

As such, Ford believes that it could stuff extra cooling equipment in the frunk, which would then be used in a selective manner. When needed, the additional cooling system could kick in and provide anywhere from lower to high rates of extra cooling power based on the system’s needs, which is an interesting idea for certain – and, perhaps, a useful one at some point in the future.
