Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a suspension damage detection system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on February 24th, 2020, published on April 9th, 2024, and assigned serial number 11951792.
The Ford Authority Take
In recent months, Ford has filed a bevy of patents that aim to detect the presence of wear and damage on vehicles in the future, and then take action after that happens. This list includes ideas for a brake pad wear monitoring system, a tire pressure loss detection and alert system, a coolant leak detection system, a wheel impact detection system, a vehicle defect detection system, and a vehicle damage identification system, to name just a few. However, that list also recently expanded to include this – an idea for a suspension damage detection system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.
The concept here is quite similar to the aforementioned patents in that this system would be able to detect when suspension damage occurs in a vehicle – which often happens after the driver hits a pothole or other obstacle. Problem is, in today’s world, this type of damage isn’t often detected right away, which can only make things worse later on.
Thus, this proposed system would use cameras and sensors to determine when suspension damage occurs, and if it’s out of a certain predetermined threshold, the system would warn the driver and take different types of action depending on the extent of the damage. This could range from advising the driver to operate the vehicle at a lower speed or even pull over if things are bad enough, which could help prevent even more expensive repairs down the road.
