The Ford Authority Take

With automotive theft setting yet another new record in 2023 – and the theft of pricey parts like lighting, tailgates, catalytic converters, and wheels on the rise as well – Ford has filed several patents aimed at helping to rectify that problem. That list includes ideas for things like a way to have vehicles automatically move around to fool thieves into thinking owners are home when they’re away, as well as an active wheel theft prevention system. Now, this newly filed patent keeps that trend going with a new idea, this time, for a wheel theft detection system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

This particular system would utilize sensors both inside of the vehicle itself and in each tire, which would be able to determine when a thief is attempting to steal that vehicle’s wheels. If that is the case, the system would sound an alarm – such as making the horn go off – while also flashing the vehicle’s lights, turning on external cameras, and even relaying this information to an external device or law enforcement.

This is certainly an interesting idea, and one that may be fairly simple to integrate into future Ford vehicles. After all, all new vehicles these days come with tire pressure monitoring systems that already rely on sensors placed inside of that model’s wheels/tires, which then relay information to the driver. As such, it makes perfect sense that Ford would want to use a similar type of system to help prevent wheel theft, too.
