It Takes A Lot To Prep A Ford GT For Transport: Video

One of many celebrity owners, Tim Burton of the mega-popular YouTube channel Shmee150 has plenty of experience with the Ford GT after having driven his many miles over the years – and in multiple countries, to boot. Burton has also cranked out a number of interesting videos related to the Ford GT, even giving us a closer look at the last example ever produced a little over a year ago, in fact. Now, Burton is back with more interesting Ford GT content, this time, showing us what it takes to transport such a valuable and special machine across the vast ocean.

Back in 2019, Burton took his Ford GT to the U.S. and proceeded to drive it all over the country, an experience he replicated in a couple of other vehicles, too. Now, it’s heading back from Burton’s home in the UK to the states, where it will soon head to Circuit of the Americas with the GT1 Sports Club, as well as Monterey Car Week and several other stops. But first, the GT has to be shipped across the  proverbial pond, which Burton has enlisted a company called My Car Import to handle.

There are several steps involved in this process, including disconnecting the battery, which requires removing the headlight. It also has to be low on fuel, and its smart charger must be unplugged, too. Once the trailer arrives, the Ford GT gets loaded up so that it can head to the port, though getting in and out of the low-slung sports car during this process – as well as moving it around – isn’t exactly a walk in the park.

Finally, the GT gets loaded in a 20-foot-long overseas container – which it barely fits in, width-wise – and is strapped down. The key gets placed in a pouch inside of the container before it’s sealed up, and now, all that’s left to do is wait – around 10-14 days, it seems. As Burton points out, one can also fly a car across the ocean and shave a lot of time off of that transport, but it costs around twice as much, which makes this method a bit more attractive if one can afford to wait a bit longer.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.
