As 2024 Cup Series season enters its third month, the NASCAR Ford teams are still in pursuit of their first win, the longest the manufacturer has gone without a victory since the 2010 season. That’s not to say The Blue Oval hasn’t been a factor, though. Brad Keselowski almost won last weekend at Texas, and reigning champion Ryan Blaney has had a few top five finishes. Now, according to a report from NASCAR.com, NASCAR Ford driver Todd Gilliland says he thinks a victory is possible at Talladega this weekend, and he might just be the one to make it happen.
Currently, Gilliland drives the No. 38 Ford Mustang Dark Horse in the Cup Series. So far, he has proved to be the driver to beat at superspeedways in 2024, leading 74 laps at drafting tracks this year and boasting an average finish of 9.67, although he has yet to turn that into a win.
“I think there’s definitely been a tough start to the season just as far as not being able to win with the Ford yet, but we know our Dark Horse Mustangs have a lot of speed, and I definitely think they’re all-around the best cars when they show up to the superspeedways,” Gilliland said. “Obviously, we still have a long ways to go in every area – as racers, we’re really never satisfied, I would say – but this weekend, we definitely feel like we should be strong.”
Gilliland went on to praise his fellow NASCAR Ford drivers and their outstanding performances at superspeedways like Talladega.
“I feel like all the [Team] Penske drivers are really strong at superspeedways; obviously, my teammate Michael [McDowell] has won the Daytona 500 and always runs really well,” Gilliland said. “So I think, for Ford in general, all the drivers are really in tune with maybe what they need at a superspeedway, and then also our cars are definitely, I would say, the best to show up for these types of race tracks.”
