Ford recently revealed that it has been secretly working on a low-cost EV platform via a skunkworks team within its walls for the past couple of years as it shifts its focus to smaller and cheaper models, which is slated to underpin a variety of future all-electric models. The first use of this platform will come in 2026, when a small crossover with a $25k price tag and a larger interior is slated to launch, though it will likely be followed by a small pickup and dedicated ride-share vehicle as well. However, while speaking at the 2024 Bank of America Automotive Summit, Ford CFO John Lawler also revealed that the next-generation Ford F-150 EV will also benefit from this new platform as well.
“Doug is leading both of those and he’s bringing as much back into our larger platform that the next Lightning pickup truck will be on, or pickup truck will be on,” Lawler said. At the same conference, Lawler also revealed that the next-generation Ford F-150 EV may not continue to use the Lightning name, as is currently the case, too.
As Ford Authority reported earlier this week, the second-generation Ford F-150 EV has been delayed after the automaker opted to push back its production start date at the Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center at BlueOval City from 2025 to 2025. However, FoMoCo has given us a few details regarding what we can expect from this future model over the past several months as well.
Nicknamed “Project T3” (for “Trust the Truck”), this next-generation model is slated to be built at the under-construction BlueOval City complex in Tennessee starting in 2025, and perhaps also the Dearborn Truck plant and Rogue Electric Vehicle Center. Ford CEO Jim Farley previously described its styling as something like the Millennium Falcon from the Star Wars franchise “with a porch attached,” and also added that it will be a superior offering compared to the Tesla Cybertruck.
We’ll have more on the second-generation Ford F-150 EV soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for the latest Ford F-Series news, Ford F-150 news, F-150 Lightning news, and comprehensive Ford news coverage.
