Ryan Sieg, driver of the No. 39 NASCAR Ford Mustang Dark Horse in the Xfinity Series, lost in heartbreaking fashion at Texas on April 13th, 2024. Sieg was beat by just 0.002 seconds at the line, losing his shot at what would have been his first-ever win in a NASCAR national series in over 15 years of competition. But according to a report from NASCAR.com, he’s keeping his chin up and staying the course, confident that victory is just around the corner.
Ryan Scott Sieg Racing Racing (RSS) fields the No. 39 Mustang for Sieg, a family-owned operation based in Georgia with just 14 employees on the roster. The organization is allied with Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) and hopes to break the losing streak this weekend at Talladega.
“Everybody was saying, ‘You were just that short. We thought you had it!’ They were all pumped and thrilled,” Sieg said about fans approaching him after the fender-banging finish last weekend. “Yeah, it stings. But I’ve just kind of moved on and tried not to get too upset. I mean, even here, it’s all over the place everywhere I go. I’ve got a lot of fans that I didn’t even really know about.”
He added, “[Texas] was a big step to run top three, and it was pretty extraordinary to unload as the third-fastest car in practice. Everything’s going in the right direction. I just have to get that one spot better at Talladega.”
Sieg said he forced himself to watch the Texas finish on his way to a sponsorship engagement last week, and felt that he did everything he could to keep his NASCAR Ford ahead of the No. 1 Chevy Camaro SS of Sam Mayer, before ultimately falling short. He can’t help but wonder, though, if things might have been different had he been part of an established Cup Series team.
“It’s like, sometimes you want to just win,” Sieg said. “You know what I mean? You almost want to go to a different team that’s capable of winning. And then you’re also like, ‘Well, I just don’t want to leave what I’ve started here. I want to see it through.'”
