The all-new seventh-gen 2024 Ford Mustang debuted last year alongside a full stable of Dark Horse-based racers, including the Dark Horse S, Dark Horse R, GT3, and GT4. The Ford Mustang GT4 has since been turned loose in the SRO-sanctioned GT4 division, taking to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Australia for the first time just last month. Now that the Mustang GT4 has some miles racked up, driver Jenson Altzman of the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, says the mighty pony car is a force to be reckoned with on track, according to a column on Sportscar 365.
Altzman says that he’s extremely pleased with the all-new Ford Mustang GT4 race car. After all, his Blue Oval-backed team has taken podium finishes in three of six Pilot Challenge races so far, although there’s been a bit of a learning curve finding the best way to keep the Mustang GT4 properly reined in.
“Mustang GT4 is refined, which demands a more hectic driving style,” Altzman says. “The former platform was maybe a little bit rowdier, so your driving style needed to be calm. That’s really cool to me, and it’s allowed me to work on my driving adaptability. I feel when push comes to shove against smaller, lighter cars, we’ll be able to go toe-to-toe on the brakes and compete.”
Most recently, Altzman and his team charged into a podium finish at Sebring after a challenging start to the weekend. The Ford Mustang GT4 didn’t show its true potential in practice, leaving Altzman to lean on his experience in the simulator to figure out what needed to change. Once they got the race car dialed in, it was practically unstoppable.
“You can feel the love,” Altzman said of his team and Ford Performance. “Usually, you sort of feel like the stepchild in GT4 – and you don’t take that personally, but you just assume that GT3 is going to get more attention. That hasn’t been the case.”
