Amid declining demand for EVs in general, Ford has shifted gears in recent months, expanding its focus on hybrids while also delaying the launch of select all-electric models – a list that includes both the North American three-row Ford Explorer EV and the next-generation Ford F-150 EV, as Ford Authority previously reported. However, that doesn’t apparently include the under-development electric Ford van that has long been slated to be built at the Ohio Assembly plant, which came to light following the automaker’s new master contract agreement with the United Auto Workers (UAW) last November.
Ford has confirmed that its ongoing expansion plans at the Ohio Assembly plant in Avon Lake continue unaffected by these recent moves, and the automaker’s plans to produce a new electric Ford van there for commercial customers is on track as well. That new electric Ford van is currently expected to launch in the middle of the decade, as originally planned.
According to the automaker, half of the structural steel that’s part of this expansion has already been erected at the Ohio plant, while the interior slabs are being poured, concrete walls are going up, and masonry work has begun on the interior walls. FoMoCo expects to begin tool installation at the Ohio Assembly Plant in spring 2025.
This news doesn’t come as a huge surprise given the fact that commercial customers have thus far been more keen to switch to EVs when compared to retail customers, but it’s notable, regardless, given the fact that Ford has shifted its focus in that market to cheaper models. The first fruit of that effort is expected to be a $25k crossover – which may be built at the Louisville Assembly plant – and is slated to launch in late 2026.
We’ll have more on this future electric Ford van soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for 24/7 Ford news coverage.

I have owned vans for my business since the 70s…..unless it a govt agency….i dont see how a ev van with a loaded rage of just over 100 miles…is going to be a huge seller…,,i think you see FORD having wished along with others got sucked in to this EV war with Tesla. and a big hangover is seemly coming…..i can see where a small cheap ev …that people could use as a second vehicle…might be a niche mark…
