Every once in a while, a former Blue Oval NASCAR racer pops up for sale, and we’ve come across a trio as of late – a list that includes a 1994 Thunderbird racer, a 2001 Ford Taurus stock car driven by Jeremy Mayfield and Mike Wallace, and a more vintage 1976 Ford Torino that is a real-deal NASCAR veteran, too. Now, fans of that long-running motorsports series can also bid on this early 2000s vintage Ford Taurus racer, which was piloted by Ricky Rudd during its heyday and is up for grabs over at Bring a Trailer.
Rudd retired back in 2007 with 23 career wins under his belt, but this particular Ford Taurus remained in his Winston Cup Series stable from the 2000-2002 seasons. Following its retirement, the stock car was refurbished by Gene Felton Restorations based out of Georgia in 2016, and was acquired by the seller a year later. The owner tried to sell it last summer with no luck, and now, it’s back up for grabs looking good as new.
There are a few imperfections marring its bodywork, but this Ford Taurus NASCAR racer is unmistakeable thanks to its black and yellow bodywork with a #28 Texaco Havoline livery, Lexan windows, and black aero wheels wrapped with yellow letter Goodyear Eagle racing slicks. The racing rig rolls on a full tube chassis with Bilstein shocks and Brembo four-wheel disc brakes with custom air ducts. Peek inside, and one will find an all-business cabin with a BUTLERBuilt racing seat, a Simpson harness, a roll cage, and a fire-suppression system.
Power for this former NASCAR racer comes from a 358 cubic-inch V8 fitted with a Holley four-barrel carburetor, a painted carbon-fiber airbox, tubular exhaust headers, and various other go-fast goodies. It sends power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission, though as one might imagine, it isn’t street legal – not that we imagine a true-blue NASCAR or Ricky Rudd fan will care about such things.
