The Ford F-150 – and its Ford F-Series counterpart, the Ford Super Duty – have long topped not only the sales charts, but also, the list of the most stolen vehicles in the U.S. In fact, the F-Series, collectively, has ranked among the most stolen vehicles in data acquired by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) in 2020, 2021, and 2022, so it only seemed destined to continue that trend in 2023 as well. Now that the NICB has released its most stolen vehicles in the U.S. list for 2023, that’s precisely the case – though this year, the rankings are a bit different.
We say that because this time around, the NICB isn’t lumping the Ford F-150 and Super Duty together – rather, those models are listed separately, which is also the case with the Chevy Silverado 1500 and HD lineup. Regardless, the Ford F-150 ranked as the ninth most stolen vehicle in 2023 with 15,852 thefts reported to insurance companies, placing it behind the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Chevy Silverado 1500, Kia Soul, Honda Accord, Honda Civic, and Kia Forte.
This year actually marks a rather dramatic shift in terms of what kinds of vehicles thieves are targeting, as full-size pickups have long dominated that list. In 2023, however, a massive rise in Kia and Hyundai thefts helped completely reverse that trend. According to NICB, this trend can at least be partially attributed to a recent social media trend demonstrating how to capitalize on flaws to easily steal Kia and Hyundai models, making it all the more important to exercise caution such as parking in well-lit areas and inside garages when possible, as well as performing simple tasks like locking one’s doors.
“These rankings highlight the persistent threat of vehicle theft across the country,” said NICB President and CEO David J. Glawe. “NICB works with law enforcement agencies and industry partners to deploy advanced technologies and strategies to combat vehicle theft from organized criminal networks and individuals. Even as we work to deter crime, it is crucial for owners to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect their vehicles.”
