The Ford Focus has been in production for quite a long time now, and in Europe, has long been one of the most popular new and used vehicles among consumers. Though it’s facing discontinuation in 2025 after already departing North America years ago, the Ford Focus is also one of the most popular used vehicles in that region, ranking among the top 50 last year, as well as the most scrapped car in the UK. Now that the first quarter of 2024 is in the rear-view, the Ford Focus also ranked as the third most popular used vehicle choice over that time span as well, according to new data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
While the Ford Fiesta once again topped this list in Q1 2024 by moving 80,814 units, the Ford Focus came in third with 60,058 sales – just a few thousand behind the second-place Vauxhall Corsa. After that, the Volkswagen Golf, Mini, Vauxhall Astra, BMW 3-Series, Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Qashqai, and Audi A3 round out the latest list of the best-selling used vehicles in the UK for the opening quarter of 2024.
As far as the overall UK used vehicle market goes, it enjoyed a tremendous boost in Q1 after growing 6.5 percent to 1,967,923 units, which also marks the fifth consecutive quarter of growth, 16 straight months of increases, and the best first quarter of any year since 2019. Much of this, according to SMMT, can be attributed to improving supply and lower prices compared to the onset of the pandemic. However, electric vehicles enjoyed an even bigger boost – 71 percent growth year-over-year – as those types of vehicles begin to enter the used market as well.
“A reinvigorated new car market is delivering more choice and affordability for used car buyers and, increasingly, they are choosing to go electric,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive. “To enable even more drivers to enjoy the benefits of zero emission motoring, ensuring both supply and demand remains robust is essential. Incentivizing new EV uptake and investing in a chargepoint network that is accessible, available and affordable to all will drive the nation’s net zero transition.”

Unfortunately Ford has no idea how to build and make money on sedans in the US, so for the 1st time in my 62 years I’ll be buying a Honda Civic.
