Ford Inventory Situation Has Improved, Says CFO John Lawler

Following years of near-record low inventory levels, the automotive industry has, for the most part, bounced back in a big way over the past few months. In terms of Ford inventory levels, specifically – as well as its luxury arm, Lincoln – supply has actually gotten to the point where it’s excessive in select cases, and as a whole, both brands ranked far above the overall industry average as recently as March. Ford CFO John Lawler touched on this same topic while speaking on the automaker’s Q1 2024 conference call with investors, too.

“Yes, that’s come down considerably, and if you look at us on an overall basis, our dealer day supply is mid-50s,” Lawler said. “Yes, we are completely out of stock on Rangers. Maverick is like 30-day supply or something like that. F-150 came down because we had quite a few ’23s. But now with the launch and the quality effort, I think the stocks are really in good shape. And Super Duty, we have very few in stock for retail.”

Ford inventory levels have indeed declined somewhat as of late as the company works to keep them in check, but still came in at a 97 days’ supply at the end of March, regardless, while Lincoln stood at 130 days’ supply. However, at least some of this can be blamed on select models, as the automaker introduced new incentives for carryover 2023 Ford F-150 and Ford Bronco models recently as a way to help make room for newer 2024 models.

Meanwhile, as Lawler notes here, some Ford models remain in high demand, and that includes the redesigned Ranger and the Maverick, which has been in short supply since it launched for the 2022 model year. Both the 2024 Ranger and refreshed 2024 F-150 began shipping to dealers just a few weeks ago, too.
