To honor the 60th anniversary of the Mustang nameplate, the Ford Mustang GT3 racers donned a special livery inspired by eight significant pony cars throughout its history on-track. Recently, Ford employees had the opportunity to check out the aptly named “Champion Spirit” livery in person at several Blue Oval facilities in Michigan – and meet the IMSA drivers behind the wheel of the brightly colored machines.
As detailed in a recent report from Sportscar365, four factory drivers from Multimatic Motorsports visited Flat Rock Assembly and Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn. Joey Hand, Dirk Mueller, Harry Tincknell and Mike Rockenfeller greeted fans and showed off the Ford Mustang GT3 race car ahead of the forthcoming Detroit Sports Car Challenge on Saturday, June 1st, 2024.
“It’s been an exciting day,” said Hand. “We took Mustang GT3 sort of back to where it all started by driving it through the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. The thing about GT3 racing is that we have to start with a tub off the assembly line, so it was one of those cars that we made into a race car.”
The day-long campus tour included meet-and-greet with all four drivers, autograph sessions, and more. The Mustang GT3 race car was even taken for a lap around campus at each facility, and Ford employees were invited to take part in a raffle for the chance to win tickets to the Detroit Sports Car Challenge this weekend.

“I always find it great when you can meet the employees of the company, because we get all these messages of support on social media and online,” Tincknell said. “It makes you feel proud to be representing Ford, which will drive us forward to even more success.”
Success is something that the Ford Mustang GT3 teams are in desperate need of right now. The Blue Oval has been struggling with issues involving the required torque sensors, which have been sapping power from the pony car-inspired racers at critical points, putting them well behind the competition.
