In a show of absolute domination, Ford Mustang GT race cars swept two pole positions and two wins at Perth in the Australian V8 Supercars division on May 17th through 19th, 2024, thanks to stellar runs by Chaz Mostert and Cam Waters.
Mostert and Waters each secured a pole position, showing the way right to the checkered flag to nab the wins in their respective races. Despite the excellent showing, Mostert had a shot at sweeping every event over the weekend, but a costly mistake in the pits resulted in a five-second penalty and ruined his shot at taking it all.
Even so, he was exuberant about his win on Saturday. “Thanks to all the Ford fans for sticking with us. The car was mega,” he said after the race. “I’ve wanted this one for quite some time. It’s the first win with Ford for the [Walkinshaw Andretti United] team too.”
He added, “Supercars is so cut-throat. Gen3 wasn’t that kind to us last year. But this year, from the first round at Bathurst, we’ve had something else to race with.”
Waters was also satisfied with his breakthrough victory and turning Ford’s season around on the Supercars circuit.
“Heaps of relief. It’s been a very tough year for us,” he said. “This year has been tough and now we’re on the march.”
In both 55-lap races over the weekend, Ford Mustang GT racers accounted for seven of the top 10 finishers, a fantastic weekend for The Blue Oval overall.
“It was a typical Cam Waters weekend. He had the pace all through the weekend. We wanted to just come to Perth and play it simple,” said Rod Nash of Tickford Racing, the team that fields Waters’ Ford Mustang GT. “I think we’ve turned the corner now with the Mustang. With all the changes we’ve just had to keep learning.”
