Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a four wheel steering parking system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on November 29th, 2022, published on May 30th, 2024, and assigned serial number 0174288.
The Ford Authority Take
The concept of four-wheel steering systems is nothing new, and in fact, a handful of Ford’s competitors already employ something of that sort in select vehicles. Meanwhile, Ford has filed patents for similar ideas, including one for an all-wheel steering system, a four wheel steering system with crawl mode, and a scalable tractive-power system with all-wheel steering. Now, this newly published Ford patent outlining an idea for a four-wheel steering parking system keeps that trend going yet again.
This new Ford patent outlines a four wheel steering system that would be used for purposes other than getting out of low traction situations or navigating tight parking lots, however. In this case, it’s all about making it easier to parallel park, a practice that – admittedly – a lot of people aren’t exactly skilled at. However, if this Ford patent become a reality, that may make learning how to parallel park a thing of the past.
This proposed system would function just like any other four wheel steering setup The Blue Oval has proposed so far, as all four wheels would be able to rotate in difference directions, independently of each other. From there, an array of sensors would determine which way those wheels would need to face to park in various situations, which could come in handy for more than a few people if it does indeed wind up in future Ford vehicles.
