The Ford Authority Take
Ford has long been exploring ways to increase the utility of its vehicles by making it easier to carry accessories, and in that realm, the automaker has filed patents for ideas such as a moonroof accessory panel, an adjustable base plate system, and an accessory attachment system, to name just a few. Now, this new patent filing for an accessory attachment system for Ford pickup beds may be the next new way we easily add such things to that particular type of vehicle, too.
This patent outlines an idea for an attachment and locking system that would be used to secure various types of accessories to a base plate in the bed of a pickup, which could prove to be a big benefit for those that haul things like tools or other supplies – such as workers moving from one job site to the next. Along with the base plate, one or more attachment interfaces could be added, each with different mounting surfaces and locking mechanisms that would prevent those accessories from coming loose.
What’s particularly interesting about this type of interface is that Ford proposes using all kinds of attachments with it, which means that one could theoretically use it to secure just about anything that fits in a pickup bed. It even suggests that there might be a power connection for accessories like power tools, too. As such, this very interesting idea stands a pretty good chance at one day becoming ar reality, given its simplicity and broad array of potential uses.
