Though it remains unclear just how much of a footprint Ford will occupy in the renovated Michigan Central Station, that new mobility hub is slated to open up next month following several years of work. Michigan Central Station staff are already in the process of hiring ambassadors – or Station Services Associates – that will help deal with the crowds expected to attend the upcoming opening, as well as the rest of the summer. Ford is planning a big party to celebrate this historic occasion as well, and now, we know that it will play host to a concert during that big grand opening as well, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Michigan Central CEO Josh Sirefman revealed these plans during a presentation to the Detroit City Council, noting that FoMoCo intends to host a “global celebration for Detroit and Detroiters” during the grand opening of the new site. The concert – which will take place in Roosevelt Park in front of Michigan Central Station – is slated to kick off the celebration and last for around 90 minutes.
The concert will be free to attend, and will also be broadcast online for others to watch, though Sirefman stopped short of announced what musical acts will perform. That information will be revealed on May 7th, however, and the venue can accommodate around 15,000 people. Those interested in attending will need to register, and preference will be given to those living in the surrounding community.
Otherwise, it’s unclear what Ford has planned for the Michigan Central Station opening ceremony, though it will host daily open houses following that celebration, which is centered around the rejuvenation of the Corktown neighborhood and Detroit area in general. “We think this warrants a very extraordinary celebration,” Sirefman told council members. “The tone and tenor of what we’re doing is about Detroiters.”
