The Ford Transit Custom – or, the Super Duty of Europe, as CEO Jim Farley calls it – has long been one of the top sellers across Europe, and that’s particularly true in the UK. In fact, the Ford Transit Custom was that country’s best-selling van in 2023, and followed that up by leading the sales charts through the first quarter of 2024, too. However, the Transit Custom did at least temporarily lose the top spot on the UK sales charts in April, though it did so to its lineup mate, the Ford Transit, according to new data from The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT).
Last month, the Ford Transit recorded 2,148 sales, which was enough the take over the top spot from the Transit Custom, which ranked second with 1,920 sales. However, the Transit Custom still holds a sizable lead year-to-date, as it has thus far racked up 13,996 sales versus the Transit’s 10,748. Regardless of which model is in the pole position, this is obviously a good thing for The Blue Oval, particularly as the Ford Puma also closed out April as the UK’s best-selling passenger vehicle
In total, light commercial vehicle sales in the UK rose by 5.4 last month as well, marking 16 consecutive months of growth in that segment, though more electrified models are needed in order for the country to meet its targets, according to SMMT.
“Britain’s new van market continues to grow with the very latest, more fuel efficient models driving down CO2 – a core mission for the sector,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive. “Manufacturers are investing billions to bring electric vehicles to market, however, uptake is slowing and urgent action is needed. If government is serious about delivery of its ambitious targets, it must deploy an equally bold strategy for delivering van-suitable public chargepoints across the UK, now the single most important step to get a greener Britain moving.”
