Ford Valencia Assembly To Build 300K Vehicles Per Year

Back in June 2022, The Blue Oval announced that the Ford Valencia Assembly plant in Spain would be retooled for the production of next-generation all-electric vehicles later this decade, a move that came on the heels of the automaker’s decision to transition its entire European passenger vehicle lineup to EVs by 2030. However, this past March, we learned that the automaker was considering also building a new hybrid model at the Ford Valencia plant as well amid falling demand for EVs. Now that Ford has ditched its 2030 EV timeline in Europe, the same facility is slated to build a whopping 300k vehicles per year, according to a new report from Reuters.

Currently, the Ford Valencia plant builds the Kuga crossover, but it’s now set to add the aforementioned “partly electric” vehicle at the same facility starting in 2027, a company spokesperson has confirmed. This new model will be built in Spain and sold in that market, as well as others around the globe via export.

Interestingly, Spain’s Industry Ministry also added some more context to Ford’s plans by revealing that the automaker expects to build upwards of 300,000 units of this new vehicle annually. “It is a model that will guarantee the workload for this factory and prepare it for the future,” the ministry said in a statement.

It’s unclear what this new model might be, but Ford Model e Europe head Martin Sander recently revealed that the automaker is at least thinking about the possibility of continuing to sell small cars in that region. Meanwhile, the Kuga continues to enjoy tremendous success in Europe, wrapping up 2023 as one of that region’s best-selling vehicles, as well as its top-selling plug-in hybrid model.
