Kevin Harvick, former NASCAR Ford driver and current Cup Series broadcast commentator, will drive the No. 5 Chevy Camaro ZL1 for Kyle Larson in the near future, according to a report from NBC Sports.
Harvick, who retired from driving the No. 4 NASCAR Ford Mustang upon conclusion of the 2023 Cup Series season, announced that he will drive Larson’s Chevy race car at North Wilkesboro during practice and qualifying on Friday, May 17th, 2024. Larson will not be able to attend either session that day, as he will be in Indianapolis to qualify for the Indy 500. Larson has sights set on becoming the first driver since 2014 to race at Indy and the Coca-Cola 600, which are scheduled for the same day.
“When [Larson’s car owner] Rick [Hendrick] called a couple of days ago, he said, ‘Hey, I need a favor’ and I know when the conversation starts like that, that usually you have to say yes,” Harvick said prior to last Sunday’s race at Dover. “I appreciate you guys calling. It’s going to be fun.”
Larson anticipates being able to compete in the All Star heat races on May 18th, but in the event that he is unable to return to North Wilkesboro to race, Harvick will drive the No. 5 Camaro during these events as well. Larson is expected to be able to compete in the All Star race on May 19th, however.
When Harvick drives Larson’s Camaro, it will be the first time he has been behind the wheel of a Cup Series car since retirement. Previously, he drove the No. 29 Chevy fielded by Richard Childress Racing (RCR), taking over for the late Dale Earnhardt Sr. He most recently competed behind the wheel of the No. 4 NASCAR Ford, which he drove from 2017 through 2023.
